DRA308 TIE (Theatre in education)/Applied theatre

Contents and structure

This module is held in the spring semester. Focus is on the development and implementation of a Theatre-in-Education (TIE) programme for a chosen target group. A lot of the work is done in teams.

25 hours practice (touring in TIE groups in schools) is included in the module.

Generally, a studytrip to Budapest, Hungary which lasts for 5-7 days is included as part of the course to give varied impressions and experiences from different aspects of the discipline. Students must cover the costs of the excursion. Students must expect expenses of approximately NOK 5500 to cover travel, accommodation and activities. Alternative programme will be offered to students who cannot attend the studytrip. The module is offered as an international module, open for exchange students in addition to the internal BA-students in drama and applied theatre. 

The module focuses mainly on the genre Theatre-in-Education. The module also gives a general introduction to Applied Theatre. The development and implementation of a TIE-programme will be central. The combination of working artistically and pedagogically is the core of this module. An important premise is to work collectively as a team in the creative processes.

At the end of the module the candidate has obtained knowledge of:

• Theory and history of TIE and Applied theatre

At the end of the module the candidate has developed TIE skills in how to:

• Make use of devising strategies
• Develop a TIE script
• Sort out and make use of soundtracks and composition in a TIE programme
• Sort out the importance of things in a TIE programme

General competence

At the end of the study the candidate is capable of:

• Developing and implementing a TIE programme

Teaching methods

Lectures, workshops, assignment writing/journal, touring-practices in schools, tutorials, and excursion.

Compulsory learning activities

The following compulsory learning activities must be approved for the student to prepare for the exam:

• Compulsory attendance and requirements for the student's active participation in practical lessons (for instanse workshops and group work)
• Submittance of a written summary+reflection around the learning outcomes from doing a close reading of a chosen article from the reading list. Scope: about 1000 words.
• Accepted dressrehearsal of TIE-programme

Assessment

The exam consists of two parts:

• Practical group exam. The group implements a TIE-programme with or for the target group. The exam is the implantation of this programme. Related to the exam, written documentation must be registered beforehand: A: The group's manuscript. B: The group's collective weekly journal from the production period. The written documentation should be delivered to the external examiner and the course leader electronically at the latest two work days before the practical examination.
• Individual oral examination of about 20 minutes duration, based on the prescribed reading list for the course module.

One grade will be given for the exam. The two parts are weighted as follows:

• Part 1 - group grade/mark: 60%
• Part 2 - individual grade/mark: 40%

In special cases, the practical exam grade may be adjusted for individual members of the group.

If the student fails one of the exam parts, he or she can repeat the failed part. A passed exam part is valid in any case.

Mark scale: A-F.

Postponed/new exam will be an individual exam.

If unforseen situations occur, the stuent can apply for an opportunity to do a mono-TIE-programme in replacement for a practical group exam.

Examination support material

The students are free to use costumes, props, light and sound.
