Are you interested in acquiring a solid competence in English for teaching or other occupations that require a good command of the language, and knowledge of its literature and cultures? Then you should consider this course!

You may apply for this course either autumn or spring. 

Autumn semester

  • Linguistics 1: English Grammar and phonetics (10 credits)
  • English-speaking literature 1 (10 credits)
  • History and culture 1: The UK, Ireland and the US (10 credits)
  • Students considering becoming teachers may add

    Didactics 1: English teaching methodology (5 credits)

A two-week excursion to The Norwegian Study Centre in York (NSC) is an optional part of the course in the autumn semester. The study fee for the excursion is NOK 4000 (subject to changes by the NSC). This includes the cost of accommodation and teaching. All other expenses are additional (travel, food, etc). Students not going to York will be requested to write extra assignments in each module.

Spring semester

Several options are possible.

Option 1

  • Linguistics 2: English Grammar and phonetics (10 credits)
  • English-speaking literature 2 (15 credits)
  • History & culture 2: The British Empire & Commonwealth (5 credits)

 Option 2

  • Linguistics 2: English grammar and phonetics (10 credits)
  • English-speaking literature 2 (15 credits)
  • Didactics 2: English teaching methodology (5 credits)

Option 3

  • Linguistics 2: English grammar and phonetics (10 credits)
  • English-speaking literature 2 (10 or 15 credits)
  • History & culture 2: The British Empire & Commonwealth (5 credits)
  • Didactics 2: English teaching methodology (5 credits)

Study methods

We have lectures, seminars and group work. All modules require dedication and hard work, and you are expected to be active in class. Attendance is compulsory in all modules. Extensive reading of the books on the curriculum is an essential requirement in each module. Written assignments must be handed in within the deadline. Failing to do so will automatically result in exclusion from the module.
