How to become a good SciTalker
Is it possible to practice how to be a good dialogue partner for children? How can you communicate with the child and how can you know when to intervene in the child’s exploration?
In the modules below, we will present some activities that may help you become a better practitioner in this specific area, leading conversations about natural science topics with children. As a practitioner, it is useful to practice and reflect on different aspects of the interaction with respect to both content and form. You can identify and reflect on your strengths and potential for improvement, whether it concerns science knowledge, listening skills, use of questions, or the interpretation and use of non-verbal communication.
The following tasks focus on different aspects of how to interact in science conversations with children, and how you can use your own transcriptions of dialogues with children to reflect systematically on the way you talk and act.
