Field of work
Meric has nine years of experience working on various types of vessels and also served as a commanding officer in the Coast Guard for two years.
In addition to his undergraduate degree, Meric holds a master's degree in maritime transportation and management engineering from Istanbul Technical University.
Building on his extensive onboard experience and research background, Meric began his tenure at HVL/IMS in September 2021. He is a Co-leader of the Centre of Excellence in Maritime Simulator Training and Assessment (COAST), where he is currently focused on developing a synergistic simulation curriculum for higher education maritime students.
He also coordinates a project with the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU), concentrating on a comprehensive review and revision of the STCW Convention and Code.
In 2024, he completed an internship at the International Maritime Organisation.
He is a Ph.D. representative of the National Joint Ph.D. Program in Nautical Operations (2023-2025).
Research areas
As a researcher, his focus lies in analyzing various domains that employ simulation-based education, including aviation and healthcare. In addition, He study the teaching methods and technologies implemented by members of the COAST consortium, which comprises four esteemed maritime institutions in Norway.
His research methodology primarily entails conducting participant observations and interviews with students and instructors, as well as analyzing maritime-related documents from organizations such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the Norwegian Maritime Authority.
The ultimate goal of his research is to generate new knowledge regarding the efficacy of maritime simulator-based education across various institutional and organizational levels.
