Field of work
I am an associate professor at the Department of Health and Function (section for physiotherapy), where I am involved in educating the physiotherapists of the future, and contribute to professional development especially in pulmonary physiotherapy. I teach both the bachelor's program in physiotherapy and the master's program in clinical physiotherapy, and am responsible for the course for FYS140.
I graduated as a physiotherapist in 1997 at Saimaa University of Applied Sciences, in Finland. My professional background also includes working as a clinician in rehabilitation and the specialist health service since 1998, a specialization in cardiopulmonary physiotherapy, a clinical master's degree in cardiopulmonary physiotherapy from Bergen University College, and a PhD from the University of Bergen (UiB). In 2002-2023, I have worked as a specialist physiotherapist at the National Advisory Unit for Home Ventilator Treatment. I have also held a postdoctoral position at the Department of Pulmonary at Haukeland University Hospital (HUS) from 2020 to 2025, where I still have a 20% part-time position where I work as a specialist physiotherapist at the Advanced Home Hospital.
Throughout my career, I have built up an extensive national and international professional network. I lead and participate in several clinical research projects and am involved in developing professional guidelines, especially in the areas of mechanical cough support, non-invasive ventilatory support, the role of the throat as a respiratory organ, and the treatment of neuromuscular diseases. I am a member and active researcher in the research groups Bergen ILO Group, NOR-VENT, the research group at the Department of Pulmonary Medicine at HUS and Movement and Function (BeFu) at HVL.
In addition to teaching and supervising bachelor's, master's and PhD students, I often give lectures in national and international arenas and participate in organizing committees for several key conferences and courses, including courses for the Norwegian Physiotherapist Association (NFF), the World Home Ventilator (JIVD-ERCA) congress, the European Respiratory Society (ERS) course in acute and chronic respiratory failure, and the European Congress in Weaning and Early Rehabilitation in Critically Ill Patients. Through this dissemination, I hope to contribute to a strong, knowledgeable professional environment and further develop the physiotherapy profession across national borders.
