Bergen / York Intercultural Education
The main aim of this project is to increase student mobility between Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL), the Norwegian Study Centre (NSC) at the University of York (UoY), and the University of York.
Project owner
Western Norway University of Applied Sciences
Project period
January 2018 - January 2020
Project summary
The aim is to have up to 30% of the English specialisation teacher training students at HVL (specialisation of 60 credits) undertake the NSC’s study abroad programme. The NSC will pilot additional School Experience for these students. The Department of Education at UoY will likewise encourage British students to gain teaching experience in the Bergen area.
We have also included two partner schools from York in the project. These schools will accommodate HVL students on school visits, and teaching staff will participate in seminars and discussions on intercultural understanding.
Through staff collaboration (and mobility), this project also aims to develop a curriculum of texts for intercultural understanding in addition to approaches for working with these texts in the classroom. The objectives will be to develop language learning, develop moral reasoning skills and empathy, develop critical literacies and investigate power relations of class, race and gender. The Literature Circles (www.litcircles.org) approach, building on an already existing collaboration, will be implemented in this project.
By implementing the following activities, project meetings, workshops and mobilities we plan to reach our goals and by the end of the project period we want to see increased mobility numbers, collaboration with York schools and a strengthened collaboration between HVL, the Norwegian Study Centre and UoY.
