Contract research for Knutsen OAS Shipping AS: Analysis of Ballast Water.

Project summary

Knutsen OAS Shipping AS have developed a ballast water treatment system, called KBAL. This water treatment system is based on a sudden pressure drop, in combination with UV-irradiatrion. KBAL was previously approved by IMO (according to the G8 guidelines). The main aim in this project was to assist Knutsen OAS Shipping AS towards the U. S Coast Guard type approval of KBAL. We therefor cultivated the microalgae Tetracelmis suecica under laboratory conditions, and delivered the alge to the shipping company to challenge the test water during KBAL-testing. Also, water samples was analysed before and after disinfection to find out how effective KBAL was under various conditions.
