The Emergence of Derivational Affixes and Complex Structures in Catalan Sign Language (LSC)

In this talk, I will explore the boundaries between phonemes and morphemes in Catalan Sign Language (LSC) to enhance our understanding of its construction rules and morphological behavior. Using an integrated morphological model, the study categorizes key features of signs within a generative framework. The findings distinguish between phonological and morphological interfaces, allowing for a detailed description of oriented and generic morphological rules. By situating LSC signs on a continuum of grammaticalization, I will showcase examples that range from free morphemes to fully grammaticalized bound derivative morphemes. These insights enrich our understanding of LSC derivation and its relation to broader linguistic principles.
