Course description for academic year 2024/2025
Contents and structure
Organization and management 2 is an advanced course in the field of organization and management studies. Various theories and perspectives on organizations and management which in different ways highlight organizational and management behaviour is central. The aim is to develop skills of comprehensive analysis of organizations and management, how internal and external factors combined determine organizational and management behaviour and what consequences this can have for the forming and change of organizations and the management role in different contexts.
The course offers knowledge on modern organizations as complex systems, both in the private and public sectors, and how managers are expected to fill active leadership under changing conditions and expectations which are often paradoxical. A central challenge is the balance between change and innovation on one side and continuity and effectiveness on the other. Analysis of organization on different levels will be exemplified, both inside organizations and between organizations and the larger society. (As such organizations are understood as complex phenomena which can be several things at the same time and how organizations are influenced by institutional environments.)
The course shall strengthen the student abilities to reflect on and critically evaluate concrete organizational problems and challenges.
The course is a continuation of the introductory course in organizations and management (BØA112) and shall provide a platform for further specialization, also in regard of the work with the bachelor thesis.

Upon completion of the course, the student will have knowledge of:
- Different approaches to and perspectives on management and organizations
- Theories for understanding organizational behaviour and management tasks in different contexts
- The dynamics of organizational change and innovation and their impact in various sectors or businesses
Skills
Upon completion of the course, the student can:
- Apply various perspectives to critically analyse organizations and management practices
- Reflect on and identify potential dilemmas and challenges in different organizational settings
- Conduct detailed analyses to explain change and innovation as necessary conditions for long-term organisational survival
Competence
Upon completion of the course, the student can:
- Contribute to the understanding of organizational and management issues in different organisational settings and evaluate the need for change and stability at various organisational and management levels
- Effectively communicate a comprehensive understanding of change and innovation processes in organizations
- Critically comment, reflect and give advice on organizational processes
- Collaborate and communicate efficiently

Teaching and learning will vary bewtween lectures and work in studentgroups
