BER205 The challenge of enabling occupation

Course description for academic year 2017/2018

Contents and structure

The course emphasizes the understanding of occupation and enabling participation through the following issues: Housing assessments and adaptations, hand injuries and splint making, occupational therapy for children with special needs. This course also includes cultural awareness and its relevance within occupational therapy.

Through themes listed below, occupational interventions and theoretical framework is addressed:

  • Housing, housing adjustments, independent home living
  • Occupational Therapy issues related to children
  • Cultural awareness within Occupational Therapy
  • Hand injuries and splint making

Learning Outcome

A student who has completed the course should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge:

The student:

  • can discuss occupational therapy interventions in terms of conceptual foundations.
  • can discuss how occupational performance is influenced through the relation between person, performance and environment
  • can account for evidence based practice
  • familiar with the Norwegian health and welfare service and organization

Skills:

The student:

  • can utilize relevant assessment tools and interventions for the groups coveredin the course
  • can perform steps in evidence based practice with supervision
  • communicates and documents occupational therapy using relevant models, theories, and research.
  • exercises ethical practice and meets others with empathy and respect.
  • can make selective handsplints

General competance:

The student:

  • acknowledge the knowledge base in occupational therapy
  • reflects on the professional role of an occupational therapist
  • carry an ethical attitude
  • respect human rights, cultural diversity and integrate this understanding in professional practice
  • are aware of relevant legislation and political guidelines

Entry requirements

The students must have passed BER202, BRP203 and BERP2

The course overlap with OCC200

Teaching methods

The course includes group work, workshops, written assignments and seminars. Assignments can be placed in clinical settings.

A workload of 40 hours studying per week is expected.

Compulsory learning activities

Mandatory presence

Approved attendance at 80% of compulsory study participation and supervision.

Mandatory assignments

  • Written group report on housing adjustments, 1500 words +/-10%
  • Written group assignment within the field of hand injuries, splint making and Occupational Therapy, 2500 words +/-10%
  • A poster and seminar presentation within the field of occupational therapy and cultural awareness
  • An individual assignment within in the field of occupational therapy and children, 2000 words +/-10%

The assignments are handed in as one document using wiseflow 1,5 weeks prior the oral exam.

Assessment

Individual oral exam 

Individual oral examination of 20-25 minutes. The oral exam will deal with themes from the mandatory assignments.

Grading scale

The grading scale used is A to F. Grade A is the highest passing grade in the grading scale, grade F is a fail.

New exam

Students who fail (grade F) may have a new oral exam.
