Contents
This course provides an introduction to Community Music as a discipline, and the teaching will be both practical and theoretical. The goal is to provide students with insight into the performance, creative and listening aspects of music as a discipline, into Norwegian and international music heritage, and into music as an aesthetic and multicultural social phenomenon, This takes place through planning, reflections, discussions and reading relevant literature. The course will include an excursion to the Ole Bull Akademiet at Voss.
The following topics will be emphasised:
§ Introduction to Community Music as a discipline
§ Music as a societal and cultural phenomenon
§ Communication, methods, reflection and analysis
§ Disciplinary terminology, arranging and composing
§ Music-making as a relational and contextual activity
§ Norwegian folk music, song and dance
§ Music in context
§ Musical notation and writing, literature specialisation and study techniques
Practical information:
Students must anticipate expenses related to the excursion (the Ole Bull Academy costs NOK 3,000).

§ Perform and lead dance and song, and play examples from Norwegian folk music
§ Reflect on and adjust their own role in different musical communication and community situations, and to facilitate processes related to learning and communicating music
§ Create, document and facilitate music for different arenas

The candidate is able to:
§ Reflect on the role of music as a medium of communication and as a form of cultural expression
§ Communicate about and reflect upon issues associated with music, musical gatherings and musical learning
§ Initiate, motivate and organise music activities in various arenas
