Contents and structure
Mechanics: Motion along a straight line, motion in space, Newton's laws, work and energy, collisions, rotation, Newtons 2nd law for rotation, periodic motion.
Thermo physics: equation of state, pVT diagram, cyclical-, reversible-, and irreversible processes, heat transfer.
Electricity: Electrical field, electrical circuits, charge.
Learning Outcome
Knowledge:
The student knows the:
- structure of newtonian mechanics and approach to thermo physics
- Newton's 3 laws and the work-energy-law, both for translational and rotational motion
- conservation laws we need in connection with collisions, both translational and rotational motion
- conditions relating to the use of different laws and principles
- thermodynamic principles
- use of models and the model conditions
Skills
The students can perform:
- Calculations based on Newtonian mechanics, both translational and rotational motion
- Use of good and clear sketches as part of solutions in mechanics
- Calculations of simple periodic motion
- Calculations of the equation of state for ideal gas and in context with pVT-diagrams
- Calculations of stationary heat transfer, one dimensional and cylindrical symmetric
- Calculations of simple electrical circuits
- Laboratory work including teamwork and writing of reports
General qualifications:
The student can:
- Explain physical problems and solution methods to others, both in writing and verbally
- Use tools from physics to find solutions in other technical fields
- Recognize simple laws which are expressed in complex technologies
Entry requirements
Ingen.
Recommended previous knowledge
Analysis and linear algebra
Teaching methods
Lectures, workshops and laboratory work.
Regular lectures, exercises, laboratory work and similar activities will be given every third week. During the two weeks where there is no regular teaching, the students are expected to work on the subject by themselves or in teams and to follow course material that is made available online.
In special cases instruction will be given by an English speaking lecturer/guest lecturer. The exam will still be given in Norwegian.
Parts of the course might be given in Haugesund.
Compulsory learning activities
1: 2 or 3 lab excersices approved. This will be specified in the curriculum at the start of the semester. If the student has had the right to previously take the exame this compulsory assignment is considered fulfilled.
2: Will be specified in the curriculum at the start of the semester. Compulsory assigment 2 is only valid for the semester that compulsory assignments are completed and the next semester.
Assessment
Written exam, 5 hours.
Graded scale: A - E / F (failed).
Examination support material
The University College's calculator (Casio fx-82Es) will be handed out.
