Contents and structure

The course provides a basic training in performance, listening and creative activities, with a focus on building students' musical knowledge and skills. Students get the opportunity to get to know each other and music through their own performances and practical and creative processes. There will be opportunities to specialise in a chosen principal instrument. The course also contains an introduction to music as a school subject, as this subject is designed for years 5-10 in the current curriculum. Teaching materials and working methods in the teaching practice will provide the student with the skills, knowledge and experience that ensures that they are confident in teaching introductory music-making.

Knowledge:
The candidate has knowledge about:
- Practising and practice techniques
- Methods appropriate for music-making in years 5-10

- Analogue and digital teaching materials that have been developed for use in the subject for years 5-10
- The music teacher as a leader and facilitator of music education in years 5-10
Skills:
The candidate:
- Can express themselves musically and meaningfully on their own principal instrument, individually and in ensemble play
- Can develop their aural skills and connect this to practical work on their principal instrument and ensemble play
- Can sing and use voice in varied ways and accompany sing-alongs
- Is comfortable with and masters basic skills in the music as a school subject and can work with these in teaching music in years 5-10
General competence:
The candidate is able to:
- Activate and stimulate the pupils' ability to create, experience, express and reflect
- Analyse and assess their own musical and artistic learning and view this in connection with the learning of pupils in years 5-10
- Reflect on the relationship between music, methods within and outside of the field and learning in pupils in years 5-10
- Plan, implement and assess varied learning processes related to the main area of music-making in years 5-10

Teaching and work forms
The forms of work in the course will vary between practical creative work, lectures, project and group work, performances and supervision and independent practice / literature study. Teaching will take place in groups, or individually where appropriate.
