Course description for academic year 2017/2018

Contents and structure

The study of social science in primary and lower secondary teacher training includes the disciplines history and geography and the subject area social studies. The subject is intended to develop the competence to teach years 5 - 10, and will emphasize in-depth studies. The course of study is intended to qualify students to be able to work independently on both academic and didactic issues.

The subject will be placed in a didactic context and prepare the students for the occupational role as social science teacher. Through different approaches to teaching and didactic reflection, the students will develop a teacher role that promotes the pupils' awareness of society and interest in the subject.

Social science is intended to develop a broad understanding of the interaction and conflict between people, society and nature during different periods and in different parts of the world. The students will work on selected geographical areas, historical periods and areas or social science. The subject will contribute to knowledge about the history of the Sami and their situation as indigenous people.

Social science work is intended to promote students' social competence and their ability to be members of a multi-cultural society. The students will also develop their ability to contribute to such learning in primary and lower secondary school.

The subject will contribute to allowing the students to work with the basic skills; expressing themselves orally and in writing, reading and mathematics, and using digital tools.

Contents:

Social science 2a builds on Social science 1 and provides greater room for in-depth studies of history, geography and social studies. The subject provides increased knowledge and insight into central sections of social science and opens up academic and didactic in-depth studies of the three areas. The subject includes scientific work with topics that are relevant for teaching social science in years 5-10.

The subject will also provide greater understanding of the link between theoretical perspectives and didactic issues. Critical assessment of different aspects of social studies teaching for years 5-10, particularly with regard to issues related to the transition between the years, is central. In addition the subject comprises activities and work methods to promote learning in accordance with the current curriculum for years 5-10.

  • has knowledge on interaction and conflict between natural conditions and living conditions
  • has knowledge on the development of the global economy, and political, environmental and social consequences of this development, including in an indigenous people perspective
  • has knowledge of relevant research and development work in the discipline
  • has knowledge of central disciplinary didactic methods and theories
  • has knowledge on basic human rights

Skills

The student:

  • can work independently on academic and didactic issues and analyse academic issues on the basis of the subject's basis of facts and theories
  • can reflect on and demonstrate insight into historical processes
  • can raise the pupils awareness with regard to choice of learning strategies
  • can apply academic knowledge and results from research and development work

Teaching methods

Introductory lectures will be given based on the literature on the reading list. This is followed by tasks and discussions along the way. Emphasis is placed on students actively participating and contributing to a living and creative study environment.
