NAB3016 Tank Operations
Course description for academic year 2017/2018
Contents and structure
This course covers basic concepts related to work onboard oil and chemical tankers. It is focused on safe operations, prevention of hazards, HSE, crisis and emergency situations, pollution prevention, risk management and risk assessment, physical properties, relevant regulations and basic cargo operations, such as loading/discharging, tank cleaning and gas freeing.
Learning Outcome
- Knowledge:
The students should have thorough knowledge of tank operations onboard oil tankers. They should also be familiar with basic operations on chemical tankers. The students should be able to place modern tank operations in a historic context. They should be aware for research and developments within this field, and be able to update their knowledge accordingly.
- Skills:
The students should be able to use theory and the knowledge of tank operations to, for example safe execution of operations, pollution prevention and risk management. They should be able to reflect on cargo loading, storage, transportation and discharging based on their theoretical knowledge acquired through this course.
- General Qualifications:
This course is based on the requirements in STCW -78 including 2010 Manila Amendments, tables A-V/1-1-1 and A-V/1-1-2.
Entry requirements
NAB1022 Chemistry and NAB2059 Loading Techniques I.
Note; If the students wants a course certificate, must the following subjects be passed: NAB1022 Chemistry , NAB2059 Loading Techniques I and NAB2060 Loading Techniques II (or equivalent).

Compulsory learning activities
No compulsory work to get an exam in this course. However, if the student wants a course certificate, there is mandatory attendance and assignments.
