PSBU6101 Pediatric and Youth Mental Health
Course description for academic year 2017/2018
Contents and structure
The course comprises an overview of the psychosocial needs of children and adolescents, and the mental pain and problems of children, adolescents and young adults, together with an introduction in research method and literature searches.
The course also enables the student to obtain knowledge of important premises for promotion and developement of children's and adolescents' ability to cope with life crisis and psychosocial strains, and knowledge of client participation and ethics.

Knowledge
The Student:
- has comprehensive knowledge of childhood and adolescence.
- has comprehensive knowledge of children's development, growing up conditions, culture and development history, the psychosocial needs of children and adolescents, risk and protective factors, and mental problems and illnesses.
- has knowledge that enables him or her to identify the significance of social and biological factors in the development of mental problems and illnesses
- is familiar with ethical dilemmas in interdisciplinary work with children and adolescents
- has comprehensive knowledge of the basic conditions for promoting and developing children's and adolescents' abilities to cope with life crisis and psychosocial strains, and knowledge of the significance of client participation and empowerment in promotion of mental health.
- has a critical and reflective attitude to different perspectives on normality and normal development in children, adolescents and the family.
- is able to identify problems for discussion within his or her subject area.
- is able to carry out systematic literature searches and practice criticism of the sources
- has the competence to establish and enter into health-inducing and coping-stimulating relations with children, adolescents and their families based on their wants and needs.
- is able to identify and deal critically alert to the ethical and moral challenges of the subject area.
- is able to exchange viewpoints and experiences with others based on knowledge of the subject area, thereby contributing to the development of good practise.

Teaching methods
Instruction, self-tuition, teamwork, group tutorials and oral proposal.
