SP-B15 Special needs education B: Language, reading, writing and mathematics

Course description for academic year 2017/2018

Contents and structure

Good reading and writing skills are an essential prerequisite for participating at work and in society. In this subject the student will gain insight into language and speech difficulties, and reading, writing and mathematics difficulties. The student will gain insight into how kindergartens and schools can work to prevent and alleviate  difficulties at the individual - and system level. The subject addresses the following perspectives: symptoms, causes, monitoring, prevention and special education measures. The student gains special education competence that is relevant in working with adapted teaching and early intervention in an inclusive kindergarten and school.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

The student:

  • Has advanced knowledge of language and speech difficulties, reading and writing difficulties and mathematics difficulties
  • Has advanced knowledge of the causes and symptoms related to language and speech difficulties, reading and writing difficulties and mathematics difficulties
  • Has knowledge of and can apply observation and various monitoring tools and understand how preventive measures may be enabled and implemented in classes and groups
  • Has research-based knowledge of adaptation and methodological/didactic approaches within these areas
  • Has detailed knowledge on pupils with Norwegian as first and second language
  • Has knowledge on and can implement educational/organizational measures
  • Has knowledge on different learning strategies among children/young people

 

Skills

The student:

  • Can apply academic knowledge to practical and theoretical issues and make informed choices
  • Can find, assess and refer to information and subject matter and present this such that it illuminates an issue
  • Can provide advice and guidance on plans and measures
  • Can use different monitoring tools

 

 

General competence

The student

  • Has insight into academic and professional ethical issues related to work with language and speech difficulties, reading and writing difficulties and mathematics difficulties
  • Can reflect on own academic execution/practice and adjust this in light of new research on language and speech difficulties, reading and writing difficulties and mathematics difficulties
  • Can exchange opinions and experiences with others with background from and knowledge of the subject, and by way of this contribute to developing good practice
  • Can take on academic responsibility for planning, implementing and assessing special education schemes and provide advice and guidance to colleagues and parents
  • Understands links between relevant research and opportunities in educational practice

Oral Exam, 30 minutes. Grading: A-F
