Course description for academic year 2017/2018

Contents and structure

The course centers on the basic needs of humans as well as knowledge and skills required to meet such needs. The course also provides an introduction to the history of nursing, important nursing concepts and nursing theories, ethics, communication and research methods. Additionally, emphasis will be placed on important legislation and regulations applicable to health personnel. Skills training is a central element in the course. The student will practice using the nursing process for identifying and assessing the need for nursing and give the reasons for choice of course of action.

Learning Outcome

  • Has broad knowledge of basic needs and current nursing interventions.
  • Has broad knowledge of nursing pertaining to the sustainment of normal functions and prevention of complications.
  • Has broad knowledge of the chain of infection and infection preventative interventions.
  • Has knowledge of nursing theory centering on basic needs and the nursing process.
  • Has knowledge of the history, tradition and work ethics of nursing.
  • Has knowledge of ethical theories and concepts related to basic nursing.
  • Has knowledge of communication and the significance of relations in interpersonal situations.
  • Has knowledge of legislation and regulations governing the professional practice of the nurse.
  • Has knowledge of life-saving first aid with basic CPR.

  • Uses professional knowledge in assessing the need for nursing. Gives the reason for and plans the nursing interventions based on the resources and restrictions of the patient.
  • Masters practical skills in connection with basic needs.
  • Uses the nursing process in planning, implementation, evaluation and documentation of nursing.
  • Uses infection preventative interventions and practices hygienic principles.
  • Is capable of reflecting on conditions that influence communication.
  • Is capable of reflecting on the ethical challanges of nursing practice.
  • Is capable of interacting in the assessment and practice of basic nursing.
  • Is capable of searching for and using scientific papers rooted in professional nursing related to basic needs.
  • Is capable of performing basic CPR.

  • Has a reflective perspective on his or her own education and sense of decorum as a nurse.
  • Is capable of taking care of ethical and human values in practicing basic nursing.
  • Is conscious of his or her own responsibility to comply with the duty of confidentiality.

Teaching methods

Focus on student active learning methods. The following working methods may be used:  compulsory work/assignment, individual and group tutorials, self-tuition, reflection, group work, demonstrations, skills training, simulations, oral presentation, digital learning tools, classmate response, self-evaluation, seminars, research and evidence based teaching, lectures.

Compulsory learning activities

The course has compulsory work. One of the work requirements is 90% presence on parts of the course. Further clarification is evident from the semester plan.

If there are students who will do a new ordinary / new examination with a new class, it must be assessed by the course coordinator / head of studies if previously completed coursework requirements still apply for them.
