SYKHB2023 Special Needs Nursing within the Municipal Health Service and Mental Health

Course description for academic year 2017/2018

Contents and structure

The course focuses on nursing of patients (including children) with acute and prolonged mental and somatic disorders. Furthermore, we focus on geriatric nursing. Emphasis is put on health promotional and health preventative nursing of healthy and vulnerable groups in an individual perspective. Learning and instruction is organised on the basis of topics of current interest in which nursing and complementary subjects are integrated.

Teaching may take place during the afternoon/evening. Excursion/practical training may involve some travel expenses

Knowledge

The Student:

  • Has knowledge of nursing in relation to patients (including children) with acute and prolonged disorders within the field of mental health
  • Has knowledge of nursing in relation to patients (including children) with acute, chronic and prolonged somatic disorders.
  • Has knowledge of nursing in relation to patients with acute, chronic and prolonged geriatric disorders.
  • Has knowledge of health promotional nursing.
  • Has knowledge of risk factors and preventative nursing.
  • Has knowledge of how the circumstances of life regarding both patient and next of kin are influenced by illness, disorders and treatment.
  • Has knowledge of the relation significance with regard to the patient's health.
  • Has knowledge of patient and client participation with emphasis on empowerment, recognition and social participation.
  • Has knowledge of the significance of the home when practising nursing, and the tasks and functions pertaining to home care nursing.
  • Has knowledge about being a patient in an institution/various living arrangements, and the tasks and functions of the nursing home.
  • Has knowledge of holistic care of patients and their next of kin during the final stages of life.
  • Has knowledge of the history and development of mental health and the municipal health service.
  • Has knowledge of key concepts within nursing.
  • Has knowledge of the ethics of nursing theories with special emphasis on care ethics.
  • Has knowledge of development psychology.
  • Has knowledge of the organisation of the health service and its legal framework conditions.

Skills:

The Student:

  • Is able to use a health promotional approach.
  • Is able to identify risk factors and prevent illness.
  • Is able to observe, assess, plan, implement, evaluate and document care of patients.
  • Is able to maintain the needs of the next of kin.
  • Is able to carry out professional justifiable management of drugs.
  • Is able to facilitate rehabilitation.
  • Is able to employ the ethical reflection model.
  • Is able to practice professional justifiable nursing within the given frameworks and the current legislation.

General Competence:

The Student:

  • Is able to explain how one maintains comprehensive nursing vis-à-vis different patients.
  • Is able to work according to patient and user rights.
  • Is able to work evidence-based as a nurse.
  • Is able to discuss the needs of the next of kin.
  • Is able to discuss the needs of children when they are next of kin.
  • Is able to discuss the role of the nurse in cooperation with other professions.
  • Is able to discuss the responsibility of the nurse with regard to continuity of the patient pathway.
  • Is able to reflect on his or her own attitudes, actions and manners.
  • Is able to maintain work ethical values.
  • Is able to discuss the value of health promotional and preventative work.
  • Is able to discuss the duties of the nurse and the requirements for justifiable nursing. 

Entry requirements

Passed subjects SYKHB1021 and SYKHB1031, approved compulsory work related to SYKHB1022 and SYKHB1032.

Recommended previous knowledge

All preceding courses.

Teaching methods

Focus on student active learning methods. The following working methods may be used:  compulsory work/assignment, individual and group tutorials, self-tuition, reflection, group work, demonstrations, skills training, simulations, oral presentation, digital learning tools, classmate response, self-evaluation, seminars, research and evidence based teaching, lectures.

Compulsory learning activities

The course has compulsory work. One of the work requirements is 90% presence on parts of the course. Further clarification is evident from the semester plan.

If there are students who will do a new ordinary / new examination with a new class, it must be assessed by the course coordinator / head of studies if previously completed coursework requirements still apply for them.

Assessment

Graded marks. Home exam, 3 days.
