Contents and structure

The subject provides an introduction to core themes and perspectives in organizational theory. Central themes and perspectives are goals, strategy, and efficiency in organizations, organizational structure, organizational culture, power and conflicts, organizations and surroundings, motivation and performance, communication, decision-making processes, learning and innovation, and change in organizations.

Learning Outcome

The student:

  • Can account for various theoretic perspectives within organizational theory.
  • Can identify, at the concept level, basic organizational processes such as the goal-setting, decision-making, communication, and information processes.
  • Can account for what is meant by formal and informal organizational structures.
  • Can account for the organization culture concept and how this appears in organizations.
  • Can explain phenomena such as power, power base, control mechanisms, and conflicts within organizations.
  • Can account for theories on motivation and rewards
  • Can account for learning and change at the individual and organizational levels.
  • Is familiar with ethical dilemmas in organizations.
  • Can account for what is involved in organizations\' responsibility to society.

The student :

  • Can apply various theoretical approaches and perspectives in relation to the way organizations function.
  • Can reflect upon their own choices of theoretical approaches to analyzing organizations.
  • Can use analytic thought in relation to current and future participation in organizations.

Lectures, individual work with the course material, and group work with obligatory assignments.
