ELE106 Advanced Control Systems Engineering

Contents and structure
This course contains the principles of modern techniques in modeling, simulation, analysis and design of multivariable control systems.
Advanced control techniques based on state space is taught, in order to get advanced knowledge of automation systems.

- Root Locus techniques
- Frequency analysis
- Cascade control
- State-space modeling of multivariable systems
- Linearization
- Decoupling of coupled systems
- Method of pole placement.
- Discrete systems
- The z-transform
- Bilinear transform
Practical laboratory work is central to the course.
Learning Outcome
Knowledge
After completing the course the candidate has knowledge of
mathematical description of continuous multivariable processes based on state space.
- analysis and design of continuous control systems using the controller and observer design
- mathematical description of analysis and design of discrete control systems
Skills
After completing the course the candidate has knowledge of
applying modern techniques in multivariable control systems.
- working both independently and together with others in advanced control systems engineering projects.
- mastering advanced control systems engineering methods and using instruments and software to work in a structured and targeted way
Competence
The candidate should convey more advanced control systems information related to theories, issues and solutions

Teaching methods
Lectures, Laboratory work, Exercises.
Compulsory learning activities
5 compulsory assignments, three laboratory exercises. Mandatory attendance at laboratory exercises.
Valid mandatory assignments are valid in 3 semesters following approval.
Assessment
4 hours written exam. The grading scale used is A to F. Grade A is the highest passing grade in the grading scale, grade F is a fail.
Examination support material
Textbook. Own written pocketbook with formulae (tied up) but no loose sheets of paper.
All kinds of calculators. PC with the use of all software related to the course except all types of communication software.
