Contents and structure

 English 1, second part for School Years 5-10,(ages 10-16), is an introduction to language teaching and didactics using a rich and varied selection of texts for both personal and professional development and for the target group pupils. The course covers the development of language skills, textual competence and the development of active vocabulary.

In teaching English to 10-16 year-olds, the general characteristics and development of this age group are crucial factors in their language devlopment. The course provides insight into the various methods and activities suitable for this group.

The course has two components:

1. Didactics
2. Literature and Culture

Learning Outcome

 Knowledge:

 

Students will:

• have knowledge of the English curriculum in schools and its place within the European framework for language learning
• have knowledge of a wide range of language textbooks and other learning resources that can be used in language teaching
• have knowledge of English as a world language, its development in its role as a contact language for people from different nations and cultures, and its importance for internationalization within education and employment
• have insight into work developing basic skills in school Years 5-10 and be aware of issues around transition between primary and secondary school
• have knowledge of children and teenagers¿ language learning and development, in a second language perspective, and be aware of language teaching theories, strategies, methods, assessment tools and assessment methods that promote language learning and development
• have knowledge of different international and national tests and assessment tools
• have knowledge of society, history and culture in English speaking nations
• have knowledge of different genres of English and their key characteristics. Be aware of the standards for academic writing, plagiarism, copyright and confidentiality

 

Skills:

 

Students can:

• use English appropriately and be a good language model for their own pupils
• plan, manage and evaluate pupils¿ learning in manners which are appropriate, taking into consideration the different cultural and linguistic backgrounds of the pupil group
• actively make use of pupils¿ own experiences with English
• provide a safe and secure learning environment with varied, differentiated and meaningful activities based on theory and their own experience which helps develop basic skills for all their pupils
• carry out an overall assessment and develop pupils independent language learning, by helping them develop a knowledge of different language learning strategies so they can make appropriate choices for themselves
• assess pupils¿ achievements, with and without grading, and be able to justify the assessment
• apply the appropriate didactic strategy with reference to the national curriculum for language learning and reflect, and critically assess their own teaching
• evaluate critically the use of textbooks and other learning materials
• facilitate pupils¿ learning and further exploration of knowledge of society, history and culture of English- speaking nations
• analyze, select and prepare suitable English texts for School Years 5-10, ensuring they are relevant and appropriate for the age group
• facilitate pupils¿ work with English texts and exploration of life and culture in English speaking nations with reference back to their own culture and society, with emphasis on written, oral and mixed media material targeted at children
• make use of digital teaching materials and technologies in a critical manner in both their own learning and in the delivery of language teaching to pupils

 

General competence:

 

Students can:

• communicate relevant subject matter and communicate in English in a manner suitable to the target group of pupils
• reflect upon their own learning and practice in relation to ethical considerations and the school¿s responsibility for the growth and development of young people

work independently and with others to identify problems linked to pupils¿ learning and development in English

Teaching methods

 Different teaching methods are used, depending on what is best for the subject matter and school Years 5-10. This applies to work with both theoretical and practical topics.

• Lecture
• Classroom interaction
• English as the language of delivery in the classroom
• Problem solving exercises in groups or individually
• Practical work with activities
• Teacher and student- led exercises
• Students will work with different practical exercises throughout the study time
• Guidance both individually and in groups
• Language laboratory: language practice
• Information Technology - ICT:ICT is used as the means of delivering information to the students and a means of communication between students and staff. ICT is an integrated part of the work on the course and is used where it is appropriate.

Compulsory learning activities

In order to qualify  for the  oral exam in literature and civilization, the following requirement needs to be fulfilled:

An oral group presentation on a central topic in American Civilization.                          

Assessment

 Portfolio: Didactics. Weighting: 50 %

Oral exam: Literature and American Civilization (Culture), 45 minutes. Weighting: 50 %
