Course content

This course comprises in-depth study of the didactic, aesthetic and cultural characteristics of arts and crafts and is based on the academic discipline of design, arts and crafts and relates to technology and visual media as part of the subject as well as the field of arts and design.

Course description

The course looks at knowledge concepts, basic scientific theory issues, relevant methodology issues and the school subject's relation to relevant national and international research. Reflection based on theories of aesthetics, culture and learning and the student's own field work seen in relation to the subject is an important part of the course.

The course will focus on the following topics:

  • Aesthetic production and reflection
  • Reflection on research methodologies and field work
  • Research methodology analysis and interpretation
  • Practical creative and theoretical specialisation within a chosen

Knowledge

  • has advanced knowledge of basic didactic issues and didactics in arts and crafts, curriculum theory and subject practice
  • has extensive knowledge of the distinctive nature of pictorial art, aesthetic objects, applied forms and architecture
  • has good knowledge of the main directions in contemporary art and art theory associated with contemporary forms of expression and selected watershed moments in history
  • has specialised knowledge of arts-informed approaches to research and development work
  • has extensive knowledge of art as a form of cognition and the teacher's role as a facilitator of the meeting between cultural material and creative artistic work
  • has in-depth knowledge of different aspects of scientific, artistic and aesthetic argumentation, reflection and theory development associated with arts and crafts as a discipline

 

Skills

  • is able to analyse academic issues based on the subject area's practice, history, traditions, distinctive nature and place in society
  • is able to use strategies and methods for creative and artistic work with different approaches in their own aesthetic production
  • is able to analyse and evaluate learning processes within aesthetic production in arts and crafts and collaborate with others in such processes
  • is able to use relevant working methods to collect data and interpret and analyse such material in arts and crafts teaching and aesthetic production
  • is able to chart and evaluate research and development issues that have been raised and which should be raised within the relevant areas for the student's master's work

  • is able to communicate extensive independent work and masters the forms of expressions associated with the subject area
  • is able to communicate about academic issues, analyses and conclusions within the subject area, both with specialists in corresponding academic environments and with others, such as the media

Teaching methods

Teaching and work forms

The course includes lectures, supervision, online discussions, online resources and work on portfolio projects. Subject teachers and students will collaborate using the Fronter learning platform. Course requirements will be included in the work on the subject. The course will include teaching practice that meets the practice requirements for the fourth year of the primary and secondary school teacher training programme for students for whom this is relevant.
