MBA504D The kindergarten teacher as teacher educator, supervisor and evaluator

Contents and structure

The course is offered in the second semester of the programme and is one of several elective courses in this semester. The course offerings may change from year to year. This course will not be offered in Spring 2019.

The course is open to incoming students and trainee teachers with relevant prerequisites.

In the course, the student will explore the three main themes: the kindergarten teacher as teacher educator, supervisor and evaluator.  

The course emphasises knowledge, critical reflection and new thinking about the role of the kindergarten teacher educator in the tension between national guidelines for kindergarten teacher education and the kindergarten as field of practice.

The course will contribute to in-depth knowledge about curriculum development in relation to content, structure and national guidelines for kindergarten teacher education. The course has an in-depth focus on pedagogy as an academic subject and a subject for cultural formation and the unifying function it has for different fields of knowledge. The course will examine didactical and pedagogic approaches to practical training of students and supervision. as well as improve skills in critically and independently implementing, analysing and assessing pedagogic supervision and evaluation.

Learning Outcome

Upon completing the course the student shall have the following overall learning outcomes:

The student

• has in-depth knowledge of the national guidelines for kindergarten teacher education and curriculum development, including the kindergarten teacher as educator
• has in-depth knowledge of pedagogy and the interconnecting function of the subject for different fields of knowledge and practice in the education
• has advanced knowledge of the kindergarten as a learning environment for professional education, didactic approaches for practical work for students, and pedagogic supervision and evaluation as concepts in theory and practice.

The student

• can analyse and critically reflect on political discourses relating to national guidelines for curriculum development.
• can analyse and independently reflect on pedagogy and its interconnecting function of the subject for different fields of knowledge and the practice field.
• can contribute to new ideas and development of the kindergarten's learning environment, explore different approaches, analyse and critically reflect on pedagogic supervision and  evaluation of students in practical training.

The student

• can lead and critically evaluate curriculum development at different levels.
• can analyse and communicate about pedagogy and independently evaluae the interconnecting function of the subject in kindergarten teacher training.
• can communicate and apply knowledge of didactic approaches to supervision and evaluation strategies for students.

Entry requirements

The students must have completed completed two of the three compulsory courses in the first semester of the programme.

In case of special circumstances, an exemption for this requirement may be granted. 

Trainee teachers must have 15 credits linked to training in supervision.

Recommended previous knowledge

Working with the project requires knowledge and skills about relevant research methods.

Teaching methods

The teaching will vary between lectures and individual and group work.

Personal and academic dialogue is required as well as the ability to write reflectively about academic issues within the course.

Supervision is available for coursework requirements.

The teaching presupposes that the students have worked compressively with the course literature in advance.

Compulsory learning activities

Coursework 1. Project plan.

The student skal prepare a plan for a project, in which the issue is based on two of the three topics in the course: the kindergarten teacher as educator, supervisor and evaluator. The plan shall comprise a time schedule for working with the project and an overview of self-chosen literature.

Cousework 2. Oral presentation.

Individual oral presentation based on the course topic that is not comprised in the issue for the project in Coursework 1.

The guidelines for the coursework requirements will be specified at the start of the course.

Approved coursework requirements are valid for 2 years following approval.

Assessment

Project

The student hand in a written report about her/his project

The scope is 4000-5000 words.

Guidelines for the project report will be provided at the start of the course.

The submission date will be provided in Studentweb and in the digital examination system.

Grade scale: A-F, where F is equivalent to a fail grade.

In the event of a new/postponed exam, the same project report can be submitted once in revised form within 1 year.
