MOA271 Aesthetics, architecture and cultural environments
Course description for academic year 2018/2019
Contents and structure
The course gives an introduction to aesthetics, building traditions and architectural history. The subject is anchored in the Planning and Building act, a tool to secure local, regional and national cultural values.
The planning process and the instruments related to the Planning and Building Act's provisions on planning and approval procedures for demolition, new construction and renovation are the focus of this course. Today¿s theories, strategies and concepts for conservation, such as preservation, restauration, reconstruction, rehabilitation and transformation will be actualized and concretized through excursions and case-studies.
Disciplinary problems related to development and protection in a transformation area will be the theme for a case assignment, which the students will present and discuss.

Knowledge
The student
- Has advanced knowledge of conservation values and principles for evaluation of cultural heritage assets and cultural environments.
- Has in-depth knowledge of the relationship between the Planning and Building Act and the Cultural Heritage Act.
Skills
The student
- Can identify and assess cultural-historical environments and produce thematic maps for cultural heritage sites on this basis.
- Can develop land-use plans and regulations as a basis for the protection of cultural heritage sites.
- Can evaluate and explain the range of consequences of various development initiatives by and in a cultural environment.
General competence
The student
- Can apply the Planning and Building Act as a tool for managing various cultural environments;
- Can communicate both with specialists and to the general public about disciplinary planning problems, analyses and conclusions.

Teaching methods
Lectures, discussions and excursions combined with practice assignments. Group work on cases. Written and oral presentations.
The course will be given in intensive sessions during the semester.
Compulsory learning activities

Assessment
A letter grade (A-F) will be appended based on the following examination parts:
- A semester assignment (groupwork) of up to 5000 words (40%)
- A written examination (60%)
In case of continuation, a new semester assignment must be submitted and/or a new written examination be taken. Students can choose to retake one of the examination parts and keep the grade from the other examination part.
