Contents and structure

The course provides exhaustive knowledge in normal changes in old age, the health of the elderly and the framework conditions in society. Various theoretical perspectives will be used to discuss elements which influence the health and lives of the elderly. The instruction will focus on the concepts health and health promotion, and emphasises the significance of knowledge-based practice and health promotion strategies as the basis in terms of service provision to the elderly. The course also provides comprehensive knowledge about current laws and public documents that govern the quality development, and provides guidelines for management and professional reliability in the sector of health and social care for the elderly.

Learning Outcome

The candidate:

• has comprehensive knowledge about ethics and the standards of thinking in the field of clinical health-and caring science related to aging/the elderly
• has advanced knowledge of political policies, legislation and regulatory framework
• has comprehensive knowledge about health promotion strategies
• has advanced knowledge about normal aging and theories of aging
• can apply knowledge of innovation in areas of importance to elderly

 

The candidate:

• is able to identify different aspects in the circumstances of life of the elderly through individual, social, cultural and ethical perspectives
• is able to analyze how the elderly¿s life history, gender and circumstances of life influence their experience of growing old and how they cope with it
• is able to employ knowledge about how the aging process influences the health and daily life of the elderly
•  is able to express problems for discussion derived from one's own subject area
• is able to carry out systematic literature searches and practice criticism of the sources

The candidate:

• is able to relate theories of health and health promotion to work with the elderly, their health and welfare
• is able to apply relevant methodologies in innovation

Teaching methods

Lectures, dialogue, self-tuition, teamwork, group tutorials, oral proposal of assignment.

The course is based on one-week workshops and  requiring a considerable effort between the meetings.
