Course description for academic year 2018/2019
Contents and structure
The course has the following main components: further training in performance, listening and creative activities, composing and arranging, music history, disciplinary didactics, training in musical leadership and introduction to various aspects of music, culture and society. The teaching will be both practical and theoretical. The course will include an excursion to the Ole Bull Akademiet in Voss. The course focuses on how students can contribute to the learning, personal growth and cultural formation in music for pupils in years 5-10.
The following topics will be emphasised:
- Arranging and composing
- Music-making and creative work in years 5-10
- Norwegian folk music, song and dance
- Selected topics of music history
- Didactics, listening methods and composing methods
- Music notation, writing processes, literature and study techniques
- Reflection on issues related to teaching music in years 5-10 in primary and lower secondary school.
Practical information:
Students must anticipate costs related to the excursion (the Ole Bull Akademiet costs NOK 3,000).

Knowledge:
- Has knowledge about Norwegian folk music and dance traditions
- Has knowledge about selected topics in music history
- Has experience-based knowledge about musical projects and interaction for years 5-10
- Has knowledge about beginner education and progress, with emphasis on the key areas of composing and listening
- Has experience-based knowledge about various ways of working on improvisation, composition and arranging for years 5-10
Skills:
- Plan, lead, implement and assess various learning processes in music, with emphasis on composing and listening in years 5-10
- Dance, play and sing examples from Norwegian folk music
- Reflect on and discuss the role of music in a diverse society
- Create their own music, score their own arrangements and adapt music for use in years 5-10
- Use their principal instrument in connection with music activities
- Lead and instruct song, ensemble play and dance processes for fellow students and in years 5-10
- Facilitate music education and development for years 5-10, with students with different aptitudes and backgrounds
General competence:
- Analytically and critically assess the role of music as a societal phenomenon
- Initiate, motivate and organise music activities in years 5-10
- Plan, implement and assess a holistic music education in line with the current curriculum for primary and lower secondary school and discuss how collaboration with various external bodies can strengthen learning processes in music
- Reflect on ethical, musical and didactic issues related to music teaching and learning in years 5-10

Teaching and work forms
The forms of work in the course will vary between lectures, practical project and group work, literature and discussion seminars, use of online resources, supervision, music-making and independent study of the literature.
