MAS119 Operations and Maintenance Engineering
Course description for academic year 2018/2019
Contents and structure
The aim of this course is to provide an introduction to the theory and application (methodologies, procedures, models and tools) of operations and maintenance engineering. The knowledge gained in the course can be used for delivering effective and efficient monitoring, testing, inspection and maintenance programs to ensure safe and reliable systems.

- Definitions of key words
- Introduction to data collection and decision making
- Risk management
- Risk assessment techniques
- HAZID & HAZOP
- Fault Tree Analysis
- Event Tree Analysis
- etc.
- Reliability centered maintenance (RCM) and maintenance planning
- Risk based inspection (RBI)
- Barrier management
- Maintenance management
Learning Outcome
It is expected that on completion of the course MAS119 Operations and Maintenance Engineering, the student shall have the following qualifications:
Knowledge
- Has knowledge of the various concepts of operation and maintenance engineering for planning inspection, monitoring, testing and maintenance actions.
- Has knowledge of risk management for the prevention of undesirable events related to safety, environment and economics
- Has knowledge of various risk assessment techniques and their applications.
- Has knowledge of reliability centered maintenance (RCM), risk based inspection (RBI) and barrier management.
Skills
- Be able to apply various risk assessment techniques in real scenarios
- Be able to carry out RCM analysis and develop maintenance plans.
- Be able to carry out RBI analysis according to DNV-RP-G101 for topside static mechanical equipment.

Teaching methods
- Class room lectures
- Invited lectures by experts from government regulation agencies, research centers, universities and industries
- Class assignments (crossword puzzles, quizzes, small assignments,etc.)
Compulsory learning activities
A learning portfolio that consists of the following coursework:
- Two written tests including multiple choice test questions + questions with short descriptive answers.
- Industrial project carried out in groups.
- Industrial project report.
- Presentation of industrial project.
- Course assignment carried out in groups.
- Course assignment report.
Three of the elements from the learning portfolio will be used in the portfolio assessment.
Assessment
Portfolio assessment.
The portfolio assessment consists of the following coursework from the learning portfolio:
- Two written tests including multiple choice test questions + questions with short descriptive answers.
- Industrial project report.
- Course assignment report.
After an overall assessment of the elements in the portfolio assessment, a final grade is given for the course.
Grading scale is A-F where F is fail.
