PSBU6103 Psychosocial Work - Varying Practices, Theories and Ethical Dilemmas

Course description for academic year 2018/2019

Contents and structure

The course comprises knowledge of communication, ethical challanges and different strategies of preventive and health promoting methods in psychosocial work. The student's professional theoretical perspectives, philosophy of science and methods are challanged in order to develop theoretical and practical action competence.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

The Student:

  • is familiar with different perspectives on mental health and how these perspectives have influenced the development of methods and measures in work with children and adolescents.
  • has advanced knowledge of communication, different ways of communicating and the significance of context and relations when interacting with children, adolescents, young adults and their families.
  • has advanced knowledge of risk and protective factors in connection with mental health, and comprehensive knowledge of methods at one's disposal as a skilled person and how to use them to spot vulnerable children and adolescents.
  • has advanced knowledge to map and identify resources in homes, kindergarden, school and local environment that enhance children's and adolescents' ability to cope with demanding psychosocial living conditions, and is familiar with different strategies and working methods that reduce such psychosocial strains.
  • has advanced knowledge of the significance of power, helplessness and violations in relation to children, adolescents and young adults.
  • has advanced knowledge of action research, philosophy of science and preparation of a project outline or a development project, using one's own profession or workplace as its starting point.
  • has comprehensive knowledge of methods for quality assurance and quality improvement of practice.

Skills:

The Student:

  • is able to employ creative methods in working with vulnerable children, adolescents and young adults, promoting coping and empowerment.
  • is able to map, identify and strenghten resources in homes, kindergardens, schools and local environments, supporting children's and adolescents' competence of coping with demanding psychosocial living conditions.
  • is able to establish and enter into relations promoting health and coping with children, adolescents, young adults and their families based on their wants and needs.
  • is able to employ knowledge of psychosocial needs within the field of one's own subject area when working with children, adolescents, young adults and families.

General Competence

The Student:

  • is able to impart, communicate and analyse professional problems in interdisciplinary cooperation.
  • is able to take the initiative to manage and strenghten inerdisciplinary and interdepartmental cooperation.
  • is able to work out a project outline.
