Contents and structure

General and sensory-related learning difficulties and disabilities

In this subject the student will gain insight into general learning difficulties and disabilities, and how the kindergarten and school can work to prevent and alleviate difficulties. The subject addresses the following perspectives: inclusion, learning from an achievement perspective, prevention, symptoms and causes, monitoring and special education measures.  The subject will point out the value of promoting a good psychosocial learning environment, where the individual child may experience security and social acceptance.           

Learning Outcome

Knowledge          

The student:

  • Has advanced knowledge of the causes and symptoms related to general learning difficulties and disabilities, mastery and learning
  • Has advanced knowledge of visual impairments, hearing difficulties, mobility difficulties, neurological and cognitive difficulties
  • Has advanced knowledge of adaptation, methodological/didactic approaches within these areas
  • Has knowledge of educational/organisational measures
  • Has advanced knowledge of key concepts: normality and abnormality, mastery and learning 

 

Skills

The student:

  • Can find, assess and refer to information and subject matter and present this such that it illuminates an issue
  • Can analyse a situation and provide advice and guidance on plans and measures
  • Can communicate key subject matter as theories, problems and proposals for solutions both orally and in writing
  • Can communicate and cooperate with different partners
  • Can take responsibility for planning, implementing and assessing special education schemes and provide advice and guidance to colleagues and parents

 

General competence

The student:

  • Has insight into key concepts, forms of understanding and dilemmas in a social, historical and critical perspective
  • Can reflect on own academic execution/practice and adjust this in light of new research on general learning difficulties and disabilities
  • Can exchange opinions and experiences with others with background from and knowledge of the subject, and by way of this contribute to innovative thinking and developing good practice
  • Understands links between relevant research and opportunities in educational practice
  • Has insight into academic and professional ethical issues related to work with general learning difficulties and disabilities, mastery and learning
  • Can apply academic knowledge to practical and theoretical issues and make informed choices
