ING2029 Mechanical Design I

Course description for academic year 2019/2020

Contents and structure

General dimensioning  yield stress and fatigue. Welding and screw connections. Shafts, rotating power transmissions, bearings, lubrication, lubricants, and seals. Systematic approach in engineering design.

Technical drawings, sketches, section views, and projections. Line shapes, dimensioning, title block and parts lists. Font types, tolerances, fits, surface roughness. Symbols for various disciplines. Use of 2D and 3D CAD software.

Learning Outcome

-Knowledge:

The student

  • Can explain different machine components in engineering design.
  • Has basic knowledge of dimensioning and calculation of stress and strain in structures with focus on yield and fatigue.
  • Has basic knowledge concerning engineering drawings.
  • Has knowledge of model creation and drawing of machine components using 2D and 3D tools.

 

-Skills

The student can

  • Dimension and calculate stresses and deformations in machine components. Note that the basis are statical and dynamical loads.
  • Create and design machine components and assemblings in 2D and 3D regarding to existing standards.
  • Can choose machine components and assemble technical system with functions according to the specification.

-General qualification:

The student:

  • Has knowledge concerning innovation processes and engineering design from the definition of the requirements and methodological solutions to final drawings.
  • Can perform the engineering design process in teams.
  • Is able to use computational tools in engineering design.

Recommended previous knowledge

Physics, Statics and Strength of Materials.

Teaching methods

Lectures and computational exercises. Performing of engineering design.

Compulsory learning activities

Yes, course requirements specified in the curriculum at semester beginning.

Assessment

Part 1: Written exam, 4 hours, accounts for 60 % on the final grade.

Part 2: Portfolio, accounts for 40 % on the final grade.

Grade:  A - E / passed;  F / failed.

Both parts must be passed.

Written exam: Simple calculator: Allowed calculator is Casio fx-82 (all varieties: ES, ES Plus, EX, Solar etc.) + all printed and written supporting materials are allowed (to bring).
