LEI110 Industrial surveying and laser scanning

Course description for academic year 2019/2020

Contents and structure

This course provides an introduction to industrial surveying, focusing on methods used in connection with prefabrication and construction, both on- and offshore. Further, this unit aims to give an understanding on how data from laser scanning and images can be used for reconstruction of 3D objects and their applications. The student will learn relevant data acquisition methods and offshore surveying tasks. Suitability of surveying methods as well as data quality and precision will be emphasized (in this course,) in order to fulfil customer requirements.

Geodesy, coordinate systems, vertical references (local and global), station calculation with and without compensator, stakeout and control surveys in platform coordinate systems, dimension control, calculation of tilt and rotation, ISO-drawings, forced instrument levelling with disabled compensator, laser scanning, point cloud processing, simple modelling for GIS and BIM, volume calculation, triangulation, photogrammetry, sensors, dynamic positioning, simple programming/scripting.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge:

  • Explain principles for establishment of local coordinate systems on- and offshore.
  • Explain principles for dimension control of piping and steel structures.
  • Describe common data acquisition methods used in on- and offshore surveying.
  • Explain the principles for laser scanning and relevant applications.

Skills:

  • Establish local coordinate systems, forced-levelling, perform stakeout and measure points in local coordinate system.
  • Perform dimension control of relevant objects.
  • Register point clouds obtained in different station points using software and perform simple modelling tasks.

General Competence:

Demonstrate basic understanding of planning and execution of on- and offshore surveying tasks using total stations and laser scanners. In addition, the candidate shall have basic knowledge of geomatics applications within various mapping tasks.

Teaching methods

Lectures, exercises and practical field work.

Compulsory learning activities

Mandatory fieldwork and five mandatory assignments in the form of written reports.

The assignments must be submitted within set deadlines and must be approved before examination can take place.

Approved assignments are valid in three subsequent semesters.

Assessment

4 hour written exam.

Time and place for the examination will be announced at Studentweb and digital assessment system.

The examination is digital and the students bring their own computer. The software used for the examination must be installed and tested by the student before the examination.

Grading scale is A-F where F is fail.

In case of new exam (outside of ordinary),  the exam could be oral.

Examination support material

All digital, printed and handwritten notes are allowed. The students use their own computer and calculator on the examination.
