Contents and structure

Art and Crafts is a broad educational subject in which knowledge is built up through practical and aesthetically creative action and critical reflection. The subject is anchored in communication and production forms that are linked to visual and material culture. The ability for academic and didactic reflection is developed in the meeting between one's own creative work, primary and lower secondary school practice and theoretical knowledge and references. The subject's research base comprises the field of aesthetic execution and the field of the subject's didactics, as well as the connections between these.

 

Arts and crafts is divided into the areas of graphic art, sculpture, design and architecture. In all four areas, knowledge and skills are developed and used in work with materials, techniques, visual communication and aesthetic instruments. The academic content is related to the expression of art and form in different periods, cultures and the everyday multicultural life of the pupils. Duodji/duodje/duedtie, which together form a central aspect of the Sami culture, have been integrated into the subject.

 

The students' competence in action is developed by means of exercises and experiences in creative processes. Knowledge of children's and young people's forms of cultural expression in the encounter with materials and symbols is at the basis of the exercise of the profession. The student must be able to use the current curriculum for arts and crafts in primary and lower secondary school and ensure the learning of all pupils in the subject, based on the circumstances of the individual and the pupil group. The student must be able to create a learning environment that stimulates experience, development and reflection relating to topicality, quality and sustainable development.

 

On the basis of the subject's distinctive character, the student must use the basic skills: Being able to develop verbally and in writing, being able to read and calculate and to use digital tools as an integral part of working with art and crafts. In the interplay between the exercise, theory and tradition of the subject, the student will develop a conscious attitude towards the subject's content, relevance and value for the individual, the school and society.

 

Presentation of the subject:

Arts and crafts 1 provides an introduction to graphic art, sculpture, design and architecture. Students must gain experience with varied work methods and different materials that provide learning outcome in relation to the requirements of the current curriculum for years 5- 10 in primary and lower secondary school. Didactics is an integrated part of the work in the subject, and also deals with organized learning in arts and crafts, the subject's historic development, relevance and legitimacy as a general education subject in school. The student must work with

practical creative processes to become a good supervisor for the pupils, must use different evaluation methods that contribute to the pupils' learning.

In arts and crafts 1 students will have a basic introduction to graphic art (art and visual communication) sculpture, design and architecture. The students can try out different techniques and material groups within these areas, and will through theory and practical work gain knowledge of aesthetics, creativity and learning processes in the arts and crafts subject. In art and form culture the students will be given an introduction to the most central eras from antiquity to the present in graphic art, sculpture, design and architecture.

The student

• has knowledge of materials, techniques, tools and aesthetic means that are common in work with pictures, sculpture, design and architecture
• has knowledge on the main movements in graphic art and sculpture, and the development of modern handicraft, design and architecture
• has knowledge of artistic theories and how forms of expression from various national and international cultures can represent a resource for one's own creative work and organised learning
• has knowledge on the main features of the subject's history, justification, content and methods
• has knowledge of central theories of children and young people's two and three dimensional style development and the visual expressions, aesthetic experience, playing and creativity of children and young people's culture
• has knowledge of applicable rules on copyright and privacy in the use of sources, images and other resources for teaching

SKILLS

The student

• can develop an idea to finished product, document and assess own creative process, demonstrate practical skills and be a good role model for pupils
• can use drawing in work with graphic art, sculpture, design and architecture
• can experiment with and use central materials, tools, effects and and techniques in work with graphic art, sculpture, design and architecture
• can select appropriate materials, techniques and tools for assignments in years 5-10, maintain tools and machinery and be aware of safety procedures (HSE procedures)
• can apply digital tools in creative work
• can use the local community as a source of experience and retrieval of knowledge as a point of departure for own work and as resource for pupil assignments
• can organize simple exhibitions, prepare various types of presentations and activate pupils in work on exhibiting their own products
• can use simple analysis tools and communicate art and form culture in varied ways, and see links between different cultural expressions, the creative activities of children and own work
• can use the subjects content, work methods and theory in planning and implementing teaching, and facilitate adapted training for all pupils
• can formulate tasks that promote basic skills in arts and crafts
• can perform learning-oriented assessment practice
• can evaluate pupils' goal fulfilment with and without marks and to give reasons for the assessments
• can evaluate textbooks and teaching aids in arts and crafts for the years 5-10
