NAB3006 Coastal Navigation for Cadet PEC

Course description for academic year 2019/2020

Contents and structure

This course has a focus on coastal navigation along the coast of Norway. The foundation of this course is a model course approved by Kystverket.

Learning Outcome

- Knowledge:

The students should e able to describe regulations for maritime marking, light house characters and information found in navigational charts.

 

- Skills:

The students should be able to connect bearings, radar, ECDIS, maritime markings, passing distance and parallel indexes to coastal navigation.

 

- General Qualifications:

The students should be able to plan and execute a coastal voyage on simulator.

Entry requirements

NAB1002 Terrestrisk Navigasjon, NAB1015 Navigasjonsinstrumenter I, NAB1016 Navigasjonsinstrumenter II, NAB1004 Navigasjonssimulator I og NAB2004 Navigasjonssimulator 2.

 

Note; this course has a limited number of places available and is open for 3rd year students only. The students have to apply through Studentweb within a specified date.Selection of applicants is based on the average grade for the prerequisite courses.

Teaching methods

Lectures and simulator exercises.

Compulsory learning activities

100% attendance in mandatory exercises.

 

Note; The students will not be able to attend the mandatory exercises unless they hav acquired the following charts: 17, 19, 21 and 23, fully updated.

Assessment

Practical/oral exam in week 47.

Note; The exam consists of two phases, planning of a voyage, and implementation of the planned voyage in the simulator. If the candidate doesn't pass the planning phase, the candidate has failed the exam.
