RUS6103 Concurrent drug abuse and mental disorders

Contents and structure

Coexistent problems and concurrent drug and mental disorders are central. Moreover, the student will acquire comprehensive knowledge of violation issues in an individual and social perspective. Gender and multicultural challanges will also be elaborated on. The course will place emphasis on systematic reflection, client participation, communication and therapeutic approaches. Empowerment and dignity as a basis for reports, diagnoses and care are central.

Knowledge:

The Student:

• has advanced knowledge of therapeutic communication and interaction
• has advanced knowledge of the significance of relations and context in interaction with patients and colleagues
• has extensive knowledge of dual diagnosis/grey area problems, symptoms and diagnosis of concurrent drug and mental disorders
• has comprehensive knowledge of the consequences of being exposed to severe violations, violence and abuse
• has comprehensive knowledge of the assistance needs of vulnerable groups heavily exposed to drugs

Skills:

The Student:

• is able to organise networks and milieus for health promotion
• is able to analyse various ethical dilemmas within the field of drug abuse
• is able to employ professionally justifiable methods for promotion of client participation and empowerment
• is able to practise professionally justifiable intervention in cases of crises and detoxication
• is able to search for articles and implement a professional development project
• is able to display insight and understanding for professional and ethical problems by reflecting on one's own practice in reflection groups

Teaching methods

Lectures, tutorials, teamwork and self-tuition.

Part-time education with weekly assemblies/single days on campus Haugesund and Stord. The study is also based on obligatory participation in tutorials, communication on the net and significant individual effort between the assemblies.

Compulsory learning activities

1 individual, written assignment, 1500-2000 words, +/- 10%.

75% attendance.

Assessment

Individual home examination, 3 days, 3000 words, +/- 10%. Graded marks
