Course description for academic year 2019/2020

Contents and structure

The course provides an introduction to the social sciences and perspectives on nursing. Central subjects are political, psychological and social matters pertaining to the understanding and practise of nursing. The course also provides an introduction to scientific thinking and approach.

Teaching may take place during the afternoon/evening.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

The Student:

  • Has knowledge of the thinking and perspectives of the social sciences.
  • Has knowledge of the significance of gender, social class and culture.
  • Has knowledge of conditions influencing the ability to manage stress.
  • Has knowledge of the relationship between the individual and the system.
  • Has knowledge of nursing in connection with patients with illnesses/disorders/impairments in a long-term perspective.
  • Has knowledge of the circumstances of life of the next of kin in cases of prolonged illness.
  • Has knowledge of research ethics.
  • Has knowledge of the research process, quantitative and qualitative research methods used within nursing.

Skills

The Student:

  • Is able to reflect on the thoughts and perspectives of the social sciences that are relevant for nursing.
  • Is able to use knowledge from the subject areas of the social sciences in order to illuminate professional nursing problems.
  • Demonstrates the ability to cooperate in different groups.
  • Is able to communicate with persons with different backgrounds in terms of culture and values.
  • Is able to use knowledge-based practice to ensure the patient receives the best nursing possible.

General Competence:

The Student:

  • Is able to exchange viewpoints on how structures in society and social frameworks influence each individual and the interaction between actors.
  • Is able to expound on structural and individual circumstances that influence man¿s ability to cope.
  • Is able to expound on nursing of patients with illnesses/disorders/impairments in a long-term perspective and the circumstances of life of the next of kin.
  • Uses and imparts research-based knowledge as a basis for change and improvement of clinical practice.

Entry requirements

Passed subjects SYKHB1021, SYKHB1031, SYKHB1022, SYKHB1032 and PRAKHB1001, approved compulsory work related to SYKHB2023 and SYKHB2033.

Recommended previous knowledge

All preceding courses.

Teaching methods

Focus on student active learning methods. The following working methods may be used:  compulsory work/assignment, individual and group tutorials, self-tuition, reflection, group work, working with projects, secondments, simulations, oral presentation, digital learning tools, classmate response, self-evaluation, seminars, research and evidence based teaching, lectures.

Assessment

Graded marks. Home exam, 3 days.
