MET202 Stability of Power Systems
Course description for academic year 2019/2020
Contents and structure
The students will acquire in depth knowledge of the dynamical process modelling and the interaction that may be encountered between the different components of the power system such as generators, transmittion lines and loads. The course will focus on the dynamical analysis of the power flow and voltage quality of power systemer. Further, the synkronous machine and synkronous generator are essential topics in the course with respect to the dynamical analysis, stability of the mechanical input and system frequency together with stability of the network voltage and the reactive power. The transient stability that characterises the power system capacity to regain and maintain the network stability following a system fault is also studied in depth.

- The candidate has knowledge about what factors determine the stabiliteten of Power systems
- The candidate has knowledge about the physical phenomena and the dynamical mechanisms that cause instability and about the models that are used to analyse og simulate these factors.

- Kandidaten har kompetanse innen stabilitetsanalyse og kan foreta kvalitetsvurderinger av eksisterende anlegg
- Kandidaten kan delta i teoretisk aktivitet i forbindelse med forskning- og utviklingsarbeid
- Kandidaten behersker analysemetoder for spenning- og effektstabilitet
Generell kompetanse
- Kandidaten kan formidle informasjon om stabilitet i elkrafttekniske systemer knyttet til teorier, problemstillinger og løsninger skriftlig på norsk og engelsk.
- Kandidaten kan delta i fagområdets utvikling.
Entry requirements
Completed bachelor grad in power systems or similar.
Compulsory learning activities
6 compulsory asignments and 2 laboratory exercises over the whole semester. 4 compulsory asignments and 2 Laboratory exercises must be accepted to be to enter the examination. The laboratory exercises are compulsory.
Acknowledged compulsory assignments are valid over the 3 subsequent semesters.
Assessment
4 hours written exam. The grading scale used is A to F. Grade A is the highest passing grade in the grading scale, grade F is a fail.
