Course description for academic year 2020/2021
Contents and structure
This course is an introduction to visual art, craft and design (visual art). You will gain experience with varied working methods and different material areas and techniques. The course emphasizes practical work and working in the studio is centred around different materials. Through this course you will gain insight into both analogue and digital techniques relevant for working with visual art. Your competence will be developed through practical training and experience of working through a creative process using aesthetical learning methods. Visual art didactics is an integrated part of this course.
Learning Outcome
Knowledge
The student:
- Has basic knowledge of relevant materials, techniques and tools
- Has basic knowledge of the diversity of local, national and global art forms and cultures, including craft, design and architecture.
- Has basic knowledge of current copyright, privacy and source criticism rules also using image and other visual resources
Skills
The student:
- Can use different basic techniques for visual expression
- Can use technology and digital tools to enhance visual art activities and expressions
- Has basic drawing skills
- Has basic skills in exhibiting visual art work
General competence
The student:
- Has some understanding as to how visual creative work can challenge one’s senses, engage emotions, demands concentration and activates the body.
- Has some insight into how the choice of materials, working methods and topics contribute to recycling, maintenance and consideration for the environment.

Teaching methods
Workshops, seminars, lectures, practical work in the studio, both individual and group-based work.
Compulsory learning activities
Material costs for this course 250 NOK.
- Compulsory attendance is a requirement for parts of this course, which parts this is will be presented in the plan for each semester.
- An oral presentation
- A written assignment
Assessment
Portfolio assessment with practical work with documentation.
Grading scale pass/fail.
