BCA401M Artistic Expression and Practice 1 - Music

Course description for academic year 2020/2021

Contents and structure

As community artist one needs to develop art practices and express him/herself professionally, artistically and publicly and master both main instrument (or vocal) and other instruments/vocal and technology on a high level. In this course the student will continue to develop towards that goal, by developing own practices and repertoire, skills needed for playing together with others, as well as music technology skills and knowledge. Skills like these enables multiple workshop possibilities containing art practices related to music genres which the most people in Western societies are familiar with. Workshop leadership is discussed and trained parallel to own musical and personal growth. 

  Academic content:

  • Main instrument lessons  
  • Band rotation - learn to play the instruments of a rock band (and sing lead vocal) 
  • Music theory and aural training - step 2 
  • Ensemble and choir rehearsing and performing 
  • Music technology 
  • Workshop leadership 

Students must have smart phone or equipment for video and photo captivation at their disposal for documentation purposes. 

The current course is linked to BCAPRA1 through certain assignments mentioned in semester plan. 

Learning Outcome

Knowledge 

The student:  

  • Has knowledge of repertoire for the main instrument/art practice  
  • Has knowledge of instruments and methods relevant for ensemble workshop delivery and instrumental teaching 
  • Has knowledge of rehearsal methods 
  • Has knowledge of analogue equipment and digital applications for music performance, rehearsal, training and learning 
  •  Has knowledge of the relationship between formal, informal and non-formal teaching and learning in music 

Skills 

The student:  

  • Can improve technically on main instrument and through growing aesthetical awareness and reflection create personal art expressions 
  • Can apply knowledge of rehearsal methods to real life settings and plan, lead and evaluate own and ensemble rehearsal and development processes 
  • Can play all (rock)band instruments on a basic level 
  • Can improvise and apply creative processes into own art practices 
  • Can use the voice in a comprehensible way in different ensembles and learning situations 
  • Can listen, take initiative, adjust to surroundings and claim space when it is applicable in an ensemble - both musically and socially 
  • Can plan, lead/facilitate and evaluate situated community arts practices that are inclusive, non-threatening and allows for personal and musical growth. 
  • Can present and perform own art practices artistically and publicly in a chosen medium 
  • Can use music technology and digital tools to enhance art activities and expression  
  • Can use music technology and digital tools a vital part of inclusive arts activities 
  • Has developed own aural skills and can discriminate between common building blocks of music. 
  • Can use accepted music theory terminology in all sorts of musical activities 

General competence 

The student:  

  • Can combine all attained skills and knowledge in a balanced way to improve musical quality in own artistry and when leading activities in community music settings 
  • Displays ability to take initiative in different settings where rehearsal, performance and musicking is happening

Teaching methods

Main instrument lessons, masterclass, lectures, workshops with practical training - both individual and in groups, litterature- and discussion seminars, self-guided use of online resources, tutoring, musical experimenting / improvising / rehearsing / composing, self-guided litterature studies, some online activities. 

Compulsory learning activities

  • Active participation is expected and compulsory attendance is a requirement for parts of this course, which parts this is will be presented in the plan for each semester. 
  • Assignments mentioned in the semester plan (made available at semester start) 

Assessment

Practical examination. 

Grading scale: A - F.
