GE414 Structural Geology and Tectonics

Course description for academic year 2020/2021

Contents and structure

The course consists of the following modules:

  • Classification and interpretation of geological structures at mesoscale
  • Introduction into the construction of bedrock maps and profiles
  • Field course with independent geological mapping, introduction into digital mapping techniques, compass measurements and stereonet plotting
  • Theory on forces, stress, strain, brittle and ductile deformation
  • Introduction to platetectonic environments (extension, contraction, strike-slip)
  • Introduction to the geological history of Norway
  • Exercises on the interpretation of geological maps, profile construction, stereonet, Mohr circle

Learning Outcome

General qualifications:

  • Be able to name, classify and interpret geological structures
  • Understand terms such as stress, strain, brittle and ductile deformation
  • Understand the most important plate tectonic environments
  • Understand the most important geological events that shaped the bedrock of Norway

Skills:

  • Construct and interpret geological maps and profiles
  • Independent mapping of lithologies and structures in the field, structural measurements with compass, use simple digital mapping tools
  • Plot and analyse structural measurements in stereonets
  • Interpet the geological history of an area based on map relationships
  • Apply structural geology techniques to various problems
  • Understand the content of structural geology articles and reports

Lectures, exercises, field course (5 days)

Compulsory learning activities

- participation in field course (5 days) and delivery of field report

- approved exercises

Assessment

Written exam, 5 hours.

Time and place will be announced on Studentweb. Letter grades A-F, where F corresponds to failed.
