ID3-224 Outdoor Education and Nordic Friluftsliv

Course description for academic year 2020/2021

Contents and structure

The course consists of ½ year study of outdoor education, and teaching methodology of outdoor activities.

Learning Outcome

After completion of the course in Outdoor Education and Nordic Friluftsliv, the candidate will have acquired the following learning outcomes, defined as knowledge, skills and general competence.

Knowledge

The candidate

  • is able to communicate knowledge of outdoor education and plan and implement selected outdoor activities
  • has knowledge, insight and the ability to critically assess the values and attitudes that characterize Friluftsliv and various forms of outdoor activities.
  • has general knowledge of norms, regulations and laws related to the practice of outdoor activities
  • has general knowledge of the fjord landscape, geology, glaciology and regional eco-systems.
  • has insight into philosophical, social and educational issues related to outdoor activities
  • is familiar with and employ appropriate methods in academic research and development work in outdoor studies

Skills

The candidate

  • is able to demonstrate basic practical skills in outdoor activities, based on the local nature and culture
  • is able to apply academic knowledge and practical skills in the local environment, such as glaciers, mountains and fjords.
  • has acquired basic knowledge and experience of planning, organizing and guiding in various types of outdoor activities.
  • is familiar with IT and specifically blogging as a communication tool

General competence

The candidate

  • can independently and critically continue to develop his/her own competence and specialization in the practice field of outdoor education
  • is able to plan and implement safe outdoor activities for various groups and environments
  • can analyze relevant academic and practical issues and implement projects in the field of outdoor education
  • can contribute to a sustainable and environmentally friendly development in the field of outdoor education

Teaching methods

The teaching and learning methods are varied and will include excursions, lectures, seminars, group-, and individual work. The subject matter will as far as possible be integrated and experienced through practical teaching. On trips and excursions, methodological considerations will play a central role, together with a high level of personal ability and mastery of skills in outdoor activities.

  • Intro excursion Veitastrond  2-3 days
  • Kayak on the Sognefjord 3-4 days
  • Mountain Hike 3-4 days
  • Glacier course Jostedalen 3-4 days
  • Excursion with Friluftsliv Bachelor students 3 days
  • Self-planned excursion 3-4 days
  • Forest excursion 3-4 days
  • Winter excursion 2-3 days

Compulsory learning activities

The course in Outdoor Education includes mandatory excursions and overnight trips that are defined as work requirements. In order to take the exam, the students must in addition have completed and passed the following mandatory assignments no later than three weeks before the exam:

  • Four reflection blog posts based on the learning outcomes in the course
  • Two written assignments with oral presentation
  • A mini lecture on a given topic. The lecture shall be presented on an excursion
  • Write a trip plan for the self-planned group excursion
  • Test of basic skills in first aid and navigation before the self-planned group excursion
  • Collecting resources and preparing a meal based on raw material from nature. Presentation of the process of preparing the meal

Assessment

Portfolio Assessment will include 3 written papers that together will be graded from A-F (A as the best). Part of total: 60%

Oral Exam graded from A-F (A as the best). Part of total: 40%
