ING4007 Industrial Fire Safety
Course description for academic year 2020/2021
Contents and structure
The subject focus is major accidents, knowledge of barriers and ignition sources. In addition it is important to know how to identify danger and find probability and consequences. The subject object is to give the students a good foundation for the work faced within technical safety and risk engineering.
Learning Outcome
Knowledge
The candidate:
- Knowledge of barriers and quality of barriers over time. The barriers focused is not limited to: Active fire protection, passive fire protection, fire barrier, explosion barrier, detection, process safety equipment (PSV, BD, ESV) and ignition control.
- Knowledge of the cause of leakage, fire and explosion and the consequences for humans and material. Explosion includes deflagration, detonation, BLEV and boil-over. Fires includes both pool, jet and diffusive fires. Also important is the knowledge of time to escalation compared to the time to evacuation, safety distances due to the calculated fire and explosion effects.
- A focus should be to learn from the incidents in the past that have changed the safety level in the industry. The historical development of the subject and national and international regulations and standards.
- Knowledge of SIL and AIL level on equipment and systems.
Knowledge of scenario-based design and the interaction between design and operation
Skills
The candidate:
- Can investigate accidents and incidents; identify the function that have failed due to technical, human and organizing barriers (MTO).
- Can perform transient calculations to investigate time to rupture of process equipment and load-bearing structure.
- Can prepare safety documentation based on probability and consequence and can contribute to industrial risk analysis and emergency properness analysis.
- Can identify risks by using HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA and identify gaps compared to required SIL level. Should be able to suggest cost effective solution that may be included in an ALARP analysis.
General competence
The candidate:
- Should be able to know the subject vocabulary ( and the most used abbreviated) and symbols and understanding documentation (P&Id, flow diagrams, and drawings)
- Can identify future challengers within the subject, have knowledge of FOU within the field and contribute with new thinking during safety evaluations and to identify solution to reduce the risk of accidents.

Teaching methods
The course will be based on collections of lectures, exercises, problem-based learning, group work, company visits (if possible), self guidance.
Compulsory learning activities
1) Attendance at visit to an industrial facility
2) Attendance at the presentations of case studies
Assessment
Oral examination (60 %),
carried out by the candidate draws one sheet with a set of questions that form the basis for the oral examination, that will last 30 minutes. The candidate has 20 minutes for preparation of reply privately without using any aids. The candidate may take notes from preparation for examination.
Project assignment (40 %).
Grading scale: A-E/F (failed)
