MAS128 Instrumentation and Control Systems

Course description for academic year 2020/2021

Contents and structure

The subject covers the physical basis for measurements and signal representation, as well as the structure and behavior of equipment for measurements and signal processing with respect to automation.

The subject also covers an introduction to data networks in technical and industrial systems.

The course holds a special focus on instrumentation, control systems and data networks in the petroleum industry.

Content:

  • Measures and units
  • Position, velocity, pressure, fluid flow, level and temperature sensors
  • Choice of sensors, signal processing, transmission and signal presentation
  • Instrumentation examples, control systems and process controllers
  • Correction elements
  • System models and transfer functions
  • Communication principles and concepts
  • Standardization and the OSI-model
  • Copper cables, fiber optics and wireless technologies
  • Overview of industrial data networks, RS232 and RS485
  • TCP/IP, industrial Ethernets, Modbus, Profibus and HART

Learning Outcome

By completion of this course, the students has gained the following learning outcome:

Knowledge:

  • The candidate has knowledge of detection of base units and derived units. The candidate has gained knowledge of elements in control loops and the role of instrumentation involved in such loops.
  • The candidate has knowledge of accuracy and reliability, signal transmission and signal processing, technical safety, system response and process controllers.
  • The candidate has a general knowledge of data networks with special focus on TCP/IP and intelligent transmitters and fieldbuses.

Skills

  • Ability to evaluate appropriateness, accuracy and reliability in selecting measurement instruments
  • Ability to evaluate appropriateness of different industrial data networks
  • Ability to set up an TCP/IP based network

General competence

  • To work in groups and individually in technical projects
  • Use computer aids for measurement and control purposes

Recommended previous knowledge

Mathematics:

  • Mathematics 1 and Mathematics 2 (MAT100 Basic Engineering Mathematics and MAT107 Advanced Mathematics (Mechanical Engineering) or similar courses)

Electric Circuits:

  • MAS130 Basic Electro Technique and Automation or similar course.

Teaching methods

Lectures, laboratory and exercises.

Compulsory learning activities

5 mandatory assignments, 3 laboratory exercises. Mandatory attendance at the laboratory exercises.

 

Compulsory work are valid in two semesters.

Assessment

Written examination, 4 hours.

Grading scale is A-F where F is fail.
