MAS309 Petroleum Production
Course description for academic year 2020/2021
Contents and structure
Flow in reservoir, wells and transport pipes. Phase relationship and separation calculation. Production process and production equipment on oil platforms. Gas-oli separator. Oil-water separation. Gas hydrates. Safety and environment.

- Can explain petroleum geology and reservoir engineering.

- Can explain production process and equipment on the oil platform, included utility systems.
- Can explain phase relationship and conditions of separation.
- Can explain conditions leading to gas hydrates and how to prevent hydrate formation.
- Can manage emissions during operation.
- Has knowledge related to oil-platform safety

- Can calculate density of real and ideal gasses.
- Can sketch phase diagram.
- Can dimension separators based on capacity and desired degree of separation.
- Can apply diagrams to determine water content in natural gas.
- Can calculate the required amount of inhibitor to prevent hydrate formation.
- Can calculate the reservoir well flow.
- Can calculate fluid and gas pressure losses in pipe flow.
- Can apply relevant NORSOK- standards.

- Can contribute to the public debate on energy issues.
- Can assess environmental issues related to petroleum production.

Simple calculator: Allowed calculator is Casio fx-82 (all varieties: ES, ES Plus, EX, Solar etc.). Technical table of formulas (Pedersen, Gustavsen, Kaasa and Olsen) will be handed out during the exam.
