MOØ233 Digital organization and management
Course description for academic year 2020/2021
Contents and structure
This course is one of three elective specialization courses targeted towards the master's thesis. The students work on an academic research proposal. The elective courses therefore partly take the form of seminars with an expectation of active participation from the students. The course will combine lectures, guest lectures, literature presentations from students, excursions to relevant organizations, and feedback on written work.
In this course, we study and discuss organization and management in a digital age, for instance how digital technologies and exploiting these enable or entail a transformation of:
- organizational structures and processes,
- core organizational capabilities,
- leadership,
- intraorganizational collaboration,
- interaction between human employees and digital solutions such as robotics and artificial intelligence,
- collaboration beyond organizational borders through platforms and ecosystems.
We also discuss issues related to sustainability, as well as ethical dilemmas and legislative issues related to the use of digital technologies in organizational life and value creation.
Learning Outcome
Knowledge
On completion of the course the student has advanced knowledge on and understanding of:
- central themes and theories within the areas of organization theory and digital transformation;
- how digital technologies enable and entail organizational transformation;
- digital technology and digital solutions that can influence the organization and its behavior and value creation.
Skills
On completion of the course the student:
- is able to explain and discuss how digital technologies enable and entail organizational transformation;
- can critically reflect upon, and apply theories and methods in the fields of organization and digital transformation;
- can participate constructively and make research-based suggestions in organizational change processes enabled or required by digital technology.
General Competence
On completion of the course the student:
- is able to work both independently and in teams on practical and theoretical problems;
- is able to present the results of such work in oral and written form;
- can communicate relevant topics to both specialists and non-specialists;
- knows when further expertise is necessary, and where it can be found.

Recommended previous knowledge
Introductory course in organizational theory MOØ222 Technology Management 1
Teaching methods
Lectures (including guest lectures), organized seminars with student presentations, self-study.
Compulsory learning activities
Each student should present at least 1 academic paper, book chapter and/or master thesis during the semester. Students should also present ideas and drafts for their research proposal, and comment on each other’s work.
Course requirements are valid in the examination semester and 3 following semesters.
Assessment
Term paper in the form of an academic research proposal, written in groups (maximum 2 students). Length of the term paper: approximately 20 pages (+/- 10%), font size 12, line spacing 1,5. Grading scale: A-F.
