Course description for academic year 2020/2021
Contents and structure
Human resource management (HRM) is a core subject in modern organizational education. The subject describes how organizations can utilize their employees¿ abilities, characteristics, and skills. It further explores how employee learning, competence development, motivation, working conditions, and job satisfaction may be facilitated.
Learning Outcome
Learning outcomes:
The course will introduce students to HRM and provide insight into the discipline area in a historical, organizational and cultural context. The course combines theory and workplace examples, and will provide training in application of theory to practical problems.
Knowledge:
Upon completion, the students should be able to:
- gain knowledge on the key HRM activities
- explain the importance of HRM functions
- understand their roles within organizations and work life
- understand the impact of internationalization on HRM functions.
- Skills:
Upon completion, the students should be able to:
- plan, implement, and evaluate HRM functions in an organization, such as the recruitment, development, termination, and facilitation of work environment measures.
General competency:
Upon completion, the students should:
- develop an understanding of the human capital and its significance for value creation within modern business environments
- gain a foundation for critical reflection regarding HRM practices

Teaching methods
Teaching and learning:
In-class lectures along with case studies in groups. The course focuses on learning through student activity, and working with practical problems through case work. In addition, self-study and working in groups between the lectures is important. The lectures will cover the key parts of the course, and will provide support for any additional work the students will engage in for understanding the subject.
Compulsory learning activities
A written assignment, to be completed in groups of 2-4 students. The assignment must be passed in order to appear in the final exam.
Assessment
Written exam, 4 hours. Letter grade
