DAT156 Work placement, ICT
Course description for academic year 2020/2021
Contents and structure
The student has to engage her/himself in the search for work placement in a company where she/he can gain valuable and relevant practical experience. This search process will typically involve writing student job applications, maintainging a CV and going to student job interviews. The course coordinator is available for help and guidance throughout this process. A company accepts the application of a student and offers the work placement for her/him in consultation with the course coordinator.
Work at the workplace/company is to be done at set weekdays and at times that are not in conflict with other scheduled courses for the student.
Students have to apply to this course before a set deadline at the end of the previous term.
The student participates actively in the daily work activities of the company. Relevant tasks may be maintenance, installation, upgrades, user support, application testing and troubleshooting, system installation and programming. Mandatory course activities include reporting through a personal blog, written reports and oral presentations. Some of these activites are done through HVL's LMS system.
At the begining of the work placement, a written contract has to be accepted and signed by the student, the company, and HVL represented by the course coordinator.

After completing the course DAT156 Practice in Workplace for IDR, the students should be able to:
Knowledge
- Describe the company, its corporate culture and the roles of colleagues at the company
- Give an account of work and working methods in the company
Skills
- Present themselves for a potential employer through the job application, resume and interview
- Study the assigned tasks and solve these
- Communicate and collaborate with colleagues to address specific tasks
- Present the work performed during the practice, both written and oral
General competence
- Adapt to applicable rules and regulations within the company
- Reflect on their own knowledge and learning, and reflect on their role in collaboration with others
Entry requirements
Minimum 90 credits must be passed before a student can be acepted for this course, including all subjects in first year (60 credits) and a minimum of 30 credits from subjects in the second second.
Teaching methods
Individual work placement in a company.
Compulsory learning activities
None.
Assessment
Exam in two parts:
1. Portfolio assessment:
- The day-to-day log/diary
- A status report half way through the work placement
- A minimum of 216 working hours attested by the contact person in the company
- A final report
2) Oral examination based on a presentation of the final report.
Grading scale is pass or fail.
Both parts must get a passing grade in order to get a final grade for the course.
Detailed guidelines and deadlines will be announced at the start of the course. Parts of the folder's contents may be required to filed/submitted as electronic documents/web pages.
The subject coordinator at the University College is responsible for the assessment of the student.
