GE407 Applied Geophysics
Course description for academic year 2020/2021
Contents and structure
The course provides an introduction to important geophysical concepts:
- Electrical resistivity methods
- Electromagnetic methods (in particularly georadar)
- Applied Seismology
- Seismic refraction surveying
- Seismic reflection surveying
- Geomagnetic methods
- Gravity methods
- Geophysical fieldwork using electrical resistivity methods, georadar and refraction seismic.
Learning Outcome
Knowledge
- Students will develop an understanding of various geophysical methods and their application in geological investigations.
Skills
- Students will know how to interpret geophysical data collected using gravity and geomagnetic methods, reflection- and refraction seismics, electrical resistivity methods and georadar.
- Students will be able to determine which geophysical method is best suited for various geological investigations and challenges.
- Students will learn how to plan and carry out geophysical fieldwork using georadar, 2D electrical surveying techniques and refraction seismic.
- Students will know how to process, interpret and present measurements collected with georadar, 2D electrical surveying techniques and refraction seismic.
General qualifications
- Students will obtain a thorough understanding of a range of the most commonly applied geophysical methods.
- Students will be able to apply their knowledge and skills to plan and carry out geophysical fieldwork, conduct subsequent data processing and present a thorough interpretation of the collected data.
