Course description for academic year 2020/2021

Contents and structure

The master's thesis is an independent scientific work in which the student deals analytically and critically with current research, theories and methods. The problem for discussion must be accounted for, based on a mode of thinking rooted in health and caring science, and discussed in light of relevant literature. Research design should display scientific methodology and method for collection and analysis of relevant data within research ethical frameworks.

The masters thesis is worked out in accordance with the current guidelines for master's theses at Stord/Haugesund University College. Preparing for the masters thesis, the student will make a project plan. The thesis may be a monograph (traditional masters thesis) or an extended paper.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

The Student:

  • has comprehensive knowledge of professional problems in light of the tradition of health and caring science
  • has knowledge of health and caring science within a new area in the field of study

 

Skills:

The Student:

  • is able to state the reasons for the choice of problem for discussion based on a health and caring scientific perspective as well as the relevance for clinical practice
  • is able to discuss a problem for discussion in light of relevant literature
  • is able to take research ethical considerations
  • is able to carry out a scientific work in the form of a master¿s thesis

 

General Competence:

The Student:

  • is able to impart the result of his own work on the master¿s thesis - both in writing and orally

Entry requirements

75 credits of the master programme (45 obligatory, 30 optional)

Teaching methods

Independent written work carried out through tutorials. Seminars will be held in which each student presents and discusses his own work with his fellow students and supervisors. Tutorial agreement is signed by student, tutor(s) and head of studies when subject for the thesis is settled. It is the student's responsibility to ask for tutorage according to agreed plan.

Assessment

Written submission 3 semesters, graded marks. If the submission is failed, the student can submit an improved version of the same master thesis once.
