Contents and structure

- International maritime Conventions and their implementation under Norwegian law.

- Principally the SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW and MLC conventions.

- UNCLOS.

- Paris MOU.

- The ISM and ISPS codes.

- EEA/ EU obligations.

- Domestic liability on oil pollution. 

Learning Outcome

Knowledge:

The student

- is familiar to key IMO and ILO conventions.

- understands how Norway can influence the content of such conventions.

- understands how the state of Norway takes on national commitments.

- understands the gap of interest between a flag state and the coastal state and how international conventions merges between the two.

- understands the EU as a sway, supranational body and executive authority.

 

Skills:

The student

- possess ability to interpret regulations to current issues.

- interprets and understands single provisions of law.

- has the ability to use the content of such provisions on specific issues.

- is familiar to certificates and documents to be onboard - in accordance with international Conventions - and sees how the certificates in question are obtained and their period of validity.

 

General Qualifications:

The student

- is able to comprehend theoretical knowledge to actual situations.

- is able to relate to the international rule of maritime law indifferent of being onboard a ship, on land or as a representative of authorities.
